Ways to keep more
- Square Plus ($49 a month per location) cuts online and invoice card fees from 3.3% + $0.30 to 2.9% + $0.30: on fees alone it pays for itself from about $12,250 a month in online card sales, or about $49,000 a month in in-person sales.
- Have customers tap, dip or swipe instead of typing in their card number: on Square Free that's 2.6% + $0.15 instead of 3.5% + $0.15.
- On Plus and Premium, ACH invoice payments are capped at $10: a $2,000 invoice costs $10.00 instead of $20.00 on Square Free.
- Use the free next-business-day transfer instead of an instant transfer (1.95%).

Fees checked on October 25, 2026 against Square's own fee schedule and help pages. Rates are for US accounts paid in US dollars. Square shows the exact fee on each payment; small differences can come from rounding.
Questions
How much does Square charge per transaction?
On Square Free: 2.6% + $0.15 to tap, dip or swipe a card, 3.3% + $0.30 for online and invoice card payments, 3.5% + $0.15 for cards typed in or kept on file, and 2.9% + $0.30 through Square's payments API. Square Plus lowers in-person payments to 2.5% + $0.15 and online to 2.9% + $0.30; Square Premium lowers in-person to 2.4% + $0.15.
Does Square charge fees on sales tax and tips?
Yes. Square says processing fees are taken out of the total amount of each transaction, including tax and tip. Enter the full amount the customer pays.
Is Square Plus worth it for the lower fees?
On fees alone, Square Plus ($49 a month per location) pays for itself once you take about $12,250 a month in online and invoice card payments, or about $49,000 a month in person, because the rate drops by 0.4 points online and 0.1 points in person. Plus also adds features this calculator doesn't value.
How much should I charge to receive $100 with Square?
On Square Free, charge $103.72 for an online or invoice card payment, or $102.82 in person, so $100.00 lands in your Square balance. Check that adding a surcharge is allowed where you sell before you pass the fee on.
Does Square refund processing fees when I refund a customer?
No. Square's help center says that when you refund a payment, the processing fees for that payment aren't refunded back to you.
How much does a Square instant transfer cost?
1.95% per transfer, on top of the processing fees. You need at least $25 in your balance for an instant transfer, and new sellers start with one instant transfer a day of up to $2,000. A same-day transfer also costs 1.95%; the next-business-day transfer is free.
What does this calculator leave out?
Custom rates (Square offers them above $250,000 a year in card sales), EBT payments, gift card load fees, bitcoin conversions, legacy plans, hardware, and accounts outside the US.
