Where these numbers come from

Questions

What fees does Etsy charge on each sale?

For US sellers: a $0.20 listing fee for each item sold, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge, and a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 per order. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, Etsy also takes 15% or 12% of the order, up to $100.

Does Etsy take fees from shipping and sales tax?

Shipping, yes: the 6.5% transaction fee, the processing fee and the Offsite Ads fee all include the shipping you charge. Sales tax is collected and paid by Etsy for US orders, so it isn't your income, but the 3% processing fee is still charged on it. That's why the calculator asks for the buyer's tax rate.

How do Offsite Ads fees work?

Etsy advertises listings on other sites. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys from your shop within 30 days, that order is charged an Offsite Ads fee: 15% if your shop has always made under $10,000 in any 365-day period, or 12% once it has reached $10,000. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; shops that have reached it can't. The fee never goes above $100 per order. You only find out an order came from an ad after the sale, so it's worth pricing for both cases.

How do I price so I don't lose money?

Enter your costs and the profit you want, and the "What should I charge?" table gives the lowest item price that gets you there, for a normal order and for an Offsite Ads order. If you can live with the Offsite Ads number, you're covered either way. On expensive items the $100 cap kicks in, so the gap between the two prices stops growing.

Why might Etsy's numbers differ from this calculator?

Things this calculator leaves out: Etsy Ads (the on-site ads you pay per click), the one-time shop set-up fee, subscriptions such as Etsy Plus, refunds, and sales tax that some states charge on Etsy's own fees. Sellers outside the US have different processing fees and may pay a regulatory operating fee. Small differences can also come from rounding.
