Questions

Is Etsy or eBay cheaper to sell on?

On a normal order, usually Etsy. Its percentage fees add up to 9.5% (6.5% transaction + 3% processing) against eBay's 13.6% in most categories, and with no shipping or tax Etsy costs less from about $3.66. Below that, eBay's smaller fixed fee wins. An order from an Etsy Offsite Ad changes the picture: with the 15% fee added, eBay costs less at every item price from $1 to $2,000. Use the calculator with your own category, shipping and tax.

Do Etsy and eBay charge fees on sales tax?

Both do, in different ways. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes sales tax. On Etsy, only the 3% payment processing fee is charged on sales tax; the 6.5% transaction fee isn't. Both collect US sales tax from the buyer, so it isn't your income. Enter the buyer's tax rate in More options to see the difference.

What fixed fees does each charge per sale?

Etsy: $0.20 per item sold plus $0.25 per order for processing, so $0.45 on a one-item order. eBay: $0.40 per order, or $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less, plus $0.35 per listing once you've used your 250 free listings that month.

How do Etsy Offsite Ads compare with eBay Promoted Listings?

Etsy advertises your listings on other sites. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys from your shop within 30 days, that order pays 15%, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in any 365-day period, up to $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; shops over it can't. eBay's Promoted Listings general campaigns charge the ad rate you choose (2% to 100%) on the total sale, including shipping and tax, only when the item sells through the ad.

What does this comparison leave out?

On Etsy: Etsy Ads (on-site ads you pay for per click), the shop set-up fee, Etsy Plus and the 2.5% currency conversion fee. On eBay: Store subscriptions, eBay Live, the 1.65% international fee when you don't use eBay International Shipping, the 3.25% currency conversion charge and the extra fee for Below Standard sellers.
